Nutshell: Revived to take on the Harlem Globetrotters once again, they're motivated to prove that they're not the Generals of old. Champagne will be popped if they win their first game in 46 years.

The Washington Generals are serious when they tell you they’re not the team your grandfather would remember. Since their creation in 1952, the Generals have been known for one thing: losing to the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters.

The Generals have suffered over 16,000 losses at the hands of the Globetrotters in their 60-plus years of existence en route to becoming the laughingstock of the basketball world. Their last win came in 1971, which ended a 2,495 game losing streak. In late 2015, the Washington Generals decided to close up shop but were revived this year to once again renew their so-called rivalry with the Globetrotters.

But, the Generals are refusing to just be a punching bag going forward, and they’re using TBT as their first step in proving to the world they mean business. Kenny “The Jet” Smith has signed on to be their general manager. The roster includes former NBA guard Sundiata Gaines, Antoine Mason, a two-time First-Team All-MAC member at Niagara and son of the late Anthony Mason, and Justin Coleman, one of the best college basketball recruits in the class of 2014.

The Generals are expecting to win their first game against the Matadors on July 8th. And, if they do, expect some champagne to be popped. It’s been a long time coming.
