The Golden Eagles live and die by the three. After Sunday’s dramatic win, they are alive and well and headed to Baltimore.

Travis Diener hit a 25-foot three pointer to hit the Target Score as the Golden Eagles defeated Boeheim’s Army 90-86 to win their first-ever Regional championship. Diener (17 points) took a pass near midcourt and drilled his fifth three-pointer to send the Marquette University alumni squad to the semifinals.

Golden Eagles coach Joe Chapman was clear on the team’s strategy in the final moments of the Elam Ending, when his squad needed a three-pointer to win it.

“We’ve got a lot of three-point shooters,” said Chapman. “We believe in everybody.”

Mo Acker led the Golden Eagles with 22 points, and Elgin Cook contributed 18 points for the victors, who shot 54% from three-point range.

Chapman, who at the conclusion of timeouts writes the amount of money that his players could win this Friday night in Baltimore, praised his team’s effort.

“That was a gutty, gritty performance by us,” said Chapman. “Everyone stepped to the plate.”

Hakim Warrick tallied a game-high 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting in the loss for Boeheim’s Army, which made just 26% of its three-pointers.
