TBT 2016: What to Know

TBT stands for The Basketball Tournament 


  • TBT is open to anyone. From professionals to former college stars to YMCA heroes
  • TBT is free to enter. Anyone who can get the votes can play
  • A 64 team field will play in 4 regions of 16 (Northeast, South, Midwest, West)
  • To qualify, a team must have a minimum of 200 votes and 7 players on its roster by June 1
  • Teams gain entry by being one of the top vote getters in each region (who will receive "automatic" bids), getting an at-large bid, by being a regional champion the previous year, or by winning our charity fundraiser. 
  • After qualification ends, TBT will seed teams 1-16 and the resulting 64 teams will compete in a single-elimination, 5 on 5, March Madness style tournament
  • If the four semifinalists from 2015 qualify by June 1, they're in

THE $2,000,000 PRIZE

  • TBT returns for a third year with a $2 Million winner takes all grand prize, double the amount from 2015, and four times more than 2014’s prize
  • The top 100 fans of the winning team will split $200k (10% of the ​the total prize), also double what the fans of 2015’s TBT Champions took home





  • TBT’s application period runs from April 1 to June 1 on TheTournament.com
  • Teams can qualify for TBT 2016 only by getting votes on TheTournament.com from fans who register on the site
  • Registered fans vote for the teams they like and support; up to 4 votes per fan
  • Fans accrue points by getting their friends and family to join them in voting


  • Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Charlotte to host regional rounds
  • Upon registering, teams can apply to any region they choose
  • Philadelphia to host Super 16 & Quarterfinals
  • New York to host Semifinals and Championship rounds
  • Tickets will be on sale soon on TheTournament.com


  • July 9 & 10: South (Charlotte) and West (Los Angeles) Regionals
  • July 16 & 17: Midwest (Chicago) and Northeast (Philadelphia) Regionals
  • July 21-23: Super 16 & Quarterfinals (Philadelphia)
  • July 30: Semifinals (New York) (ESPN)
  • August 2: $2 Million Championship Game (New York) (ESPN)

  • TBT’s 2015 field included hundreds of players who have competed at the highest levels all over the world
  • Overseas Elite, a team of veteran international professional players, won last year’s $1 Million winner-take-all title.
  • TBT 2014’s Championship was won by the Notre Dame Fighting Alumni, an alumni team featuring many of the best basketball players to ever play for the University of Notre Dame
  • Over 300 teams applied to join the field last year. Players must be 18 years of age or older to compete
  • In addition to Overseas Elite, university-based alumni teams representing schools like Syracuse University, Notre Dame, Villanova, Virginia, and others have competed in TBT’s previous editions, with more likely to join them in this and future years
