Team Challenge ALS rolled to the TBT semi-finals without meeting much of a challenge in the West Region. But, in its first real test of the tournament, the Cinderella of TBT 2017 wasn’t about to let highly-touted Scarlet & Gray stand in the way of a trip to the TBT finals and a chance at the $2 million prize.

Casper Ware scored two late baskets in the second overtime, and Team Challenge ALS advanced to the TBT Finals by defeating Scarlet & Gray, 88-83. Ware tallied a game-high 28 points in the victory for Team Challenge ALS in a highly competitive game that featured 15 ties and 11 lead changes.

“We play together,” Ware said. “It’s not just a tournament for us.”

Austin Daye (22 points) and Sean Marshall (21 points) also pitched in offensively for Team Challenge ALS, which advanced despite making just two of 13 three-pointers in the first half.

Team Challenge ALS was organized by Marshall, who built the squad partially as a means to raise money for his Boston College roommate Pete Frates, who is battling ALS. Should they win the championship on Thursday night, Team Challenge ALS has pledged to donate $250,000 of the $2 million prize to offset Frates’ mounting medical bills.

“We are playing for more than ourselves,” said Daye.

Jared Sullinger completed a solid performance in TBT, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the losing effort for Scarlet & Gray, which also benefitted from a 17-point, 10-rebound performance from Leon Rodgers.

Team Challenge ALS is already looking ahead to the TBT Finals on Thursday night, live on ESPN at 7 PM ET, and the vocal and emotional team leader/GM Marshall will lead the way.

“I believe in these guys,” said Marshall of his teammates. “Whether I’m on the court or not on the court, I believe we can win every game.”
